6-step elimination flow

Run this on every hard item — takes under 15 seconds once practiced.

    Read the lead-in first

    Know whether you need a definition, calculation, NOT/EXCEPT, troubleshoot step, or next action.

    Predict before peeking

    Cover the options. Form an answer in your head. This breaks familiarity anchoring.

  3. 3

    Eliminate aggressively

    Cross out options that contradict the stem, belong to the wrong phase, or fail unit/sign checks.

  4. 4

    Compare survivors by verb

    Between two plausible options, the difference is usually the stem's primary verb or one pivot detail.

  5. 5

    Apply last-resort heuristics

    Only when stuck after elimination: prefer the more specific complete option; on NOT questions the 'most correct' feel is often the answer to eliminate.

  6. 6

    Commit or flag

    Explain your choice in one sentence. If you cannot, flag, guess via elimination, and move on.

15-second mental checklist

  • 1.What is the stem asking? (define / calculate / NOT / troubleshoot / next step)
  • 2.What was my prediction before I looked at the options?
  • 3.Which two options are neighbors from the same topic?
  • 4.Does each surviving option match the stem's verb exactly?
  • 5.Any unit, sign, or NOT/EXCEPT trap?
  • 6.Can I explain this in one sentence? If yes → commit.

Familiarity decoy

Pattern
Option reuses textbook vocabulary in the wrong context.
Example
Biocompatibility distractors mentioning color or taste — familiar words, wrong claim.
Defense
Restate each option in plain language. If you cannot, familiarity is doing the work.

Buzzword anchor

Pattern
You spot a known term (ISO 14971, Bernoulli, troponin) and lock in before reading the stem.
Example
Seeing 'Bernoulli' and picking it when the stem asks about Poiseuille resistance.
Defense
Cover options. Read the stem. Predict your answer. Then look at choices.

Sounds-right trap

Pattern
Two options share terminology; one is mechanism, one is a different function.
Example
Electrical isolation — 'amplify signal' and 'filter noise' are real functions, not isolation's purpose.
Defense
Ask: which option answers the exact verb in the stem (purpose, mechanism, definition)?

Too-easy paranoia

Pattern
You pick an answer, then think 'it can't be that straightforward' and switch.
Example
Changing a correct first-order answer because the vignette felt simple.
Defense
If you can explain why in one sentence, commit. Overthinking is the trap.

Emotional distractor

Pattern
Stem adds fear, ethics tension, or sympathy cues to push a 'nice' but wrong answer.
Example
Patient refusal scenarios where empathy conflicts with safety law.
Defense
Ask: is this testing empathy or the governing rule (safety, EFDA, patient harm)?

Odd-one-out illusion

Pattern
Three options look similar; one looks weird — students pick or reject it on appearance alone.
Example
Three lifecycle phases listed plus one unrelated maintenance task.
Defense
Weird does not mean wrong. Evaluate each option on merit, not on how the set looks.

All-of-the-above compound

Pattern
Option bundles multiple claims when only one sub-claim is exactly correct.
Example
Mirror calculation with 'All' when only image distance matches exactly.
Defense
Verify each sub-claim independently. 'All' is rarely correct without checking every part.

Strategic guessing
